A mezzotint is a very labor-intensive and painstaking print to make. Its velvety richness is achieved by roughing the copper plate with thousands of dots/lines made by a special tool known as a “rocker.” In printing, the tiny pits in the plate hold the ink when the face of the pate is wiped clean. The results, particularly with these Mershimer scenes of New York, is quite stunning. When viewed from a distance these New York scenes can have an absolute photographic realism, but a closer look shows the artist’s sensibility at work. There is heightened intensity in the lighting and composition that distill the essence and magic of the city. It’s easy to see why Mershimer has become one of the most acclaimed contemporary mezzotint printmakers, being featured in exhibitions and museum collections throughout the country. We are honored to have his work here at the gallery and it was a delight to be reacquainted with Fred yesterday. Good old friends, indeed. These mezzotints.

Carolann Wachter is a fine artist and fashion designer based in Boulder, Colorado. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has drawn from her painting and sculpture background to create her own line of women's clothing. With a focus on fine fabrics, craftsmanship, and classic forms, Carolann has built a reputation as both an accomplished painter and a designer of quality wearable yet elegant silhouettes. Carolann has been featured in Lucky, Elle, Spur, 5280 Magazine (Denver), Boulder Lifestyle and The Boulder Daily Camera, and her hats and clothing have been sold in Barney's New York and in select boutiques around the country.

My journey as an art teacher began with a simple yet profound mission: to share my love, passion, and knowledge of the great world masters. I wanted to inspire the next generation of artists, both young and old, to embrace their creativity and let it flourish. Teaching art became my avenue to ignite the spark of imagination in all those I have the privilege to guide.

JOHN (JB) BRUNING IS A 3RD GENERATION NATIVE OF BOULDER, COLORADO COMBINING HIS PASSIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY METAL SCULTURE AND FLY FISHNG. HE IS A SAGE PRO STAFF AND ELITE PRO GUIDE. HIS SCULPTURES ARE FOUND ACROSS THE USA AND HE SPECIALIZES IN SITE-SPECIFIC COMMISSIONED SCULPTURES UNIQUELY DESIGNED FOR HIS CLIENTS.

Plein air painting and studio work are both exciting and fulfilling for him. He says, “I find that my work in the field and in the studio complement each other. The difficulties of plein air painting – rapidly changing light, the challenges of weather, and the inconvenience of carrying a studio on my back – force me to paint loosely and rapidly while staying true to the feeling of the moment. When I return to my studio, the challenge becomes one of maintaining that immediacy and freshness, while developing a small color sketch into a larger work. In the comfort of my studio and without the time pressure of changing light, I can experiment with materials and techniques. Those studio adventures, in turn, inform my field work.”

As viewers will discover, Castillo, Lee, and Rios have unique styles and subjects they choose to emphasize, but collectively their paintings speak to complex issues like the mental health challenges exacerbated by confinement; strategies for resisting institutionalization and serving time in a manner which preserves one’s dignity and personal agency; a deep frustration with our government’s inability to legislate for meaningful reform; and an ever-present longing for connection with the world beyond the prison walls. Through creative practice, Castillo, Lee, and Rios are able to resist the isolation and dehumanization that many incarcerated people face, and they retain a sense of artistic freedom. They use this freedom to illuminate truths of their lived experience and to provoke a broader public dialogue-one that is both urgent and long overdue. Impact Arts is a Colorado nonprofit dedicated to generating arts classes, programs, and exhibitions in and around the criminal-legal system. The organization brings visibility to the creative work of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists and advocates for the importance of the arts as a healing and transformative tool. Since 2005, Lael has showcased her work in open studios, art festivals, galleries, museums, and private collections. Her artistic achievements have garnered attention from various media outlets, including Fox News, CBS Colorado, ABC, The Washington Post, The Daily Camera, Voyage Denver, and Colorado Homes & Lifestyles magazine. Lael finds great joy in sharing her talents through teaching painting workshops, where she inspires others to discover their creative voice. Over the years, she has taught hundreds of students and sold over 1,000 paintings. Using large brushes and vivid acrylic colors, she brings movement and joy to the canvas. Her extensive body of work is collected nationally and displayed in homes throughout the Front Range. Committed to continually evolving her acrylic painting methods, Lael also nurtures the unique creative voices of her students. Her most notable work, a memorial mural measuring 8x24 feet, is prominently displayed at the Table Mesa King Soopers.
